ICC Profiles & Delta E: Why Print Colours Don't Match
In this video we explain how ICC profiles, CIELAB and Delta E help packaging printers match colour from design file to proof to press on board, film and paper.

KEY POINTS
- The same CMYK values print differently on coated board, PE film and uncoated paper - CMYK is an instruction, not a colour
- CIELAB (L*, a*, b*) describes colour independent of the device; Delta E is the distance between two colours
- Worked example: target L47 a68 b48 vs sample L49 a63 b44 = Delta E 6.7 (CIE76) - a clearly visible difference
- Profile types: input, display, output (press / proofer) and device link
- Standard profiles: ISO Coated v2 (FOGRA39), PSO Coated v3 (FOGRA51), PSO Uncoated v3 (FOGRA52), GRACoL 2013 (CRPC6); custom press profiles for flexo and gravure on film
- Making a press profile: stabilise press, print IT8.7/4 chart (1,617 patches), measure, build, apply, verify
- Rendering intents: perceptual, relative colorimetric, saturation, absolute colorimetric
- Packaging special cases: reverse print with white backing, metallised film, kraft board, brand spot colours
